Bye Bye Bangkok (finally)

Submitted by derms on Tue, 04/01/2005 - 5:41am.

Lotte and I spent all of yesterday in bed - diarrhea etc - possibly from something we ate at the "Cabbages and Condoms" restaurant the previous night. The restaurant was set up as a way to promote and fund birth control programs in Thailand. While we were dining at the restaurant, one of the people at our table got an SMS from a reliable source that a bomb threat had been issued for all restaurants, clubs etc where foreigners frequent. We payed our bill and quickly walked out of the building and caught a taxi to the hotel.

Happy New Year!!

Submitted by derms on Sat, 01/01/2005 - 3:21pm.

Lotte and I spent New Years at a party in a hotel. We met up with a friend of Lotte's who was in Bangkok and spent the evening with some of her family/friends. It was a very enjoyable night. The party was all you can eat and drink! By the end of the night the bar staff knew exactly what to do when they saw me approaching - they would smirk and say "One more Bacarrdi and Coke eh?". The music was quite disappointing though - one of the guys at our table left before midnight because he couldn't stand the music. There were two music acts - a cover band that played the worst music of the past 25 years and a "dj" that apparently only had 2 cd's in his collection - he played one song in its entirety three times in an hour. Aside from that, it was a lot of fun (gezellig as the Dutch would say)

Tsunami Victims

Over the past few days we have seen a number of tourists crying. At the restaurant in our Hotel we have seen quite a few people looking shell shocked - brused, battered and breaking down. There is a slightly strange atmosphere here at the moment.

Bangkok Before New Years

Submitted by derms on Fri, 31/12/2004 - 2:57pm.

Lotte and I spent the last day or two just crusing around Bangkok and going shopping. We discovered a Dutch restaurant and Lotte insisted that we go there. I had my first taste of a Dutch treat that Lotte raves about called "Bitterballen". They are similar to croquettes and were quite tasty. Later we went to an outdoor bar and were supprised to be confronted by elephants during the course of the night. You could feed them for 20 baht (about $0.70 AUD). Lotte fed a few of them. Strange.
