Dusseldorf

Submitted by derms on Mon, 31/01/2005 - 11:18am.

I reached Frankfurt at 5:30am on the 30th and stayed there for about 5 hours. The contrast between Singapore was stark - I went from drenching humidity to drenching rain. After walking around a few hotels/hostels (and balking at their excessive prices) I soon realised that there was a convention in town and accommodation was twice the price. Given that I will be meeting Bartek at Frankfurt later this month, I decided to go to Dusseldorf instead (mainly because it's next to the Nederlands border - my next port of call).

Singlish

Lotte left for Amsterdam from Kuala Lumpur on the 27th and left me all alone :( My flight leaves from Sinagpore and goes to Frankfurt. I spent a day and a half in Singapore, staying in a 16 bed dorm at a Hostel in the "Little India" district (the food is awesome!). I went out to dinner with four people staying in my dorm. One was a gay flight attendant from Canada, another was a Frenchman, who spent a lot of time talking about how many girlfriends he has and how he manages to juggle them (he looked at me at bit strange when I started taking notes ;) The other two were a Norwegian box packer and a Swiss girl who had spent the last six months travelling around Asia.

Happy Birthday to Me

Submitted by derms on Wed, 26/01/2005 - 11:15am.

Well I turned 24 today. Strange. Lotte and I are in Kuala Lumpur (we've been in Malaysia for the past few days). We are going to the KL Tower revolving restaurant for dinner tonight. However, I must acknowledge that my birthday is also shared with the following:

  • Fran
  • David Petalli
  • Douglas MacArthur (US General)
  • Paul Newman (actor)
  • Eddie Van Halen (guitarist)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (comedienne, actress)
  • Australia
  • and the following people

Pattaya

Submitted by derms on Sat, 22/01/2005 - 11:38am.

Lotte and I spent about three days in Pattaya, in which everything seems to revolve around go-go bars. There were a rediculous amount of Thai women walking around with Western men - a white guy without a female Thai "escort" is such a rarity that I get strange looks when I walked around with my "non-Thai" escort - Lotte.

Burma (Myanmar)

Submitted by derms on Wed, 19/01/2005 - 8:48am.

In the immortal words of Mr. Peterman (from Sienfeld) - "It may be Myanmar to you, but it'll always be Burma to me.". That's exactly how some countries, including the United States, feel about Burma (or is that Myanmar?). According to wikipedia, in 1989 the ruling millitary government renamed the state from the ""Union of Burma" to the "Union of Myanmar". Opponents of the regime decided not to recognise the name change, which is what leads to the confusion over the name.
